Scalp scars result due to many causes such as, direct scalp trauma, burns, infections, and surgery. Hair follicles are destroyed by Scalp injury and scarring. The roots have been permanently destroyed so the hair does not naturally grow in scarred skin. Some scars are small and easy to hide, while others may need the scar repair. Hair implants is the option to grow hair over scar tissue. In the following article there are methods to fix scars on the scalp.
Scars are often deplorable to the patients, with several psychological and social consequences. The hair transplant expert fills the scar with new hair follicles that start regrowing generally. Under the newly transplanted hair the present scars will be invisible. The hair can be cut and styled like rest of the hair, after it has taken root. Scars caused by follicular unit extraction are less visible than scars caused by other techniques. There are many methods of hair transplant donor scar repair used on patients.
Scar revision with suture:
To improve the appearance of the scar this is the method of scar repair. Correct most donor scars is by removing the scar tissue and reclosing the affected area. Visibility can be minimizing by this. With scar revision method there is 90% chance that the scar will get better. 9% chance that the scar will remain same and a small 1% chance that the scar will be worse.
Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUT) or Strip method:
There is a single thin line in the donor area where the strip was removed. By an absorbable sew the donor area is clogged and in the area of hair loss follicles are separately transplanted. Within a week or in 10 days the stitch and the scabs get clear. The mark of the stitch is not visible if the hair in the donor area is kept more than 1/2 inch. This method is the most efficient method of hair transplant because it can deliver better quality grafts, dissected under magnified vision in a shorter time at a lesser cost. The regrowth rate is over 95%. Cost of this method would be similar to that of FUE.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):
There are multiple tiny rounds, white scars in the donor area, one for each extracted follicular unit. This method is very popular. This process can also be used to fill in the donor scar. It involves removing hair from the body or head and placing it into the scar tissue at the back of the head. The method would be ideal for the people who have a small scar and a healthy amount of hair still left in the donor area. FUE is more expensive method compared to other methods. Generally, 50% to 90% of the grafts grow in scars, making the scarred areas of the scalp much less visible.
MHT (Micro hair tattooing):
It is a process that covers up the original hair transplant scar with what looks like real hair. The benefit of this treatment is that it covers up the hair transplant scar fully and without the need for surgery. The procedure is permanent and everyone is a suitable for this hair transplant scar treatment. MHT MicroHair™ and MHT HairReplication™ is a form of a very sophisticated scalp tattooing technique. Also it is cheaper than both FUE and FUT.
Botox injections around the scar area:
A new concept which has been recently introduced to hair transplant surgery is the use of BOTOX injection into the donor area to prevent stretching of the scar. The effect of injection of BOTOX is compared on the width of the donor scar on one side to the other side in post hair transplant surgery follow up visits. It is hard to conclude what is the best dose for BOTOX injection, in and around the donor wound as the number of experimented cases are less.
